The Power of Water

Water is often overlooked as a cleaning agent, but it’s surprisingly effective in removing stains from clothes. Nancy Birthwhistle, a renowned author and Great British Baking Off winner, swears by the power of water to tackle tough stains. According to her, a little H2O is all you need to get rid of stains on your clothes.

How Water Works

So, how does water work its magic? Here are some key points to consider:

  • Water is a solvent, which means it can dissolve and break down the molecular bonds that hold stains together.

Standing alongside Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley, Nancy demonstrated how to tackle a ‘fresh wine stain’ (that is, a stain that has only just emerged and not been left overnight to settle). She simply stretches a white t-shirt over a colander (in the sink) and pegs it in place so the stain is in the centre. Then, she pours boiling water from the kettle directly onto the stain and lets the liquid work its magic. “Basically what you do is pour that on and you see that you will dissolve away [the stain],” the star added, to which Cat replied: “It just disappears… There’s nothing else in that water?”

Removing Fruit Juice Stains with a DIY Solution

Fruit juice stains can be notoriously difficult to remove from clothing, but Nancy claims that a simple DIY solution can do the trick. According to her, the hack involves mixing equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. The solution is then sprayed onto the stained area, and a cloth is dabbed into the solution to gently blot the stain. The key to removing fruit juice stains is to act quickly, as the longer the stain sits, the more difficult it becomes to remove. The acidity in the vinegar helps to break down the sugars in the fruit juice, making it easier to remove the stain. The solution is gentle enough not to damage most fabrics, but it’s essential to test it on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it won’t cause any discoloration.

Removing Jam Stains with the DIY Solution

Jam stains can be particularly stubborn, but Nancy’s DIY solution can help to remove them. To use the solution, simply spray it onto the stained area and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, use a cloth to gently blot the stain, working from the outside inwards. The solution is effective at removing jam stains because the acidity in the vinegar helps to break down the pectin in the jam, making it easier to remove. It’s essential to be patient and not rub the stain, as this can damage the fabric and push the stain deeper into the material.
